Episode #37: “Tuxas Redux & Romanticizing Endings”

Rory opens the show with a recording of his daughter singing the Pen Pals theme. They joke that that is Dan’s ex-wife. Rory is wearing sunglasses, and the guys briefly sing “WKRP in Cincinnati,” and then they do a quick #saga chant to re-charge after travelling around for the live podcast. DVK talks about Jack Philips, and does his Chicago accent. They run some gassers up the stairs to get to the letters. The first letter is from me, actually, talking about how connected I felt to this podcast and community during the Weekend of Tuxas. The guys talk about how the internet, and social media in general is a wasteland. Someone made a t-shirt with the unofficial hashtags (#usherPointedAtMe) and (#Tuxas). They announce that there is going to be a standup show in Houston with Dave Jacoby, and that there is going to be a 2nd live Pen Pals at UCB Franklin, and a 3rd one in Dallas. They quickly go into a mini-Cracker Barrel bit when they are talking about the Buckeys on their trip to Houston. Coming back for the 2nd letter they really quickly go into an Aerosmith “Dream On” sing along. Rory talks about remembering the series finale of Family Ties, and crying thinking that he may never see those people again. That gives him an opportunity to bring up his Back to the Future fandom. DVK talks about how his favorite movie is Stand By Me and how he’s visited the location in Oregon where that movie was shot. They talk about a meme that says “At some point in your life you went out to play with your friends for the last time and you didn’t know about it.” DVK talks about taking his nephews to Walmart on Thanksgiving Eve and that they are starting to age out of it. “It’s all about a shared experience.” Rory jokes with DVK about Jack Philips teaching him everything he knew about drinking coffee after DVK makes an interesting observation about the letter they are responding to. Rory talks about a time he left a pair of boots in a closet at a hotel and wonders where they are and what kind of trip they went on, and how he attaches emotions to inanimate objects. Rory brings up his love for Dairy Queen Blizzards, and how it’s a nostalgia thing, how he’s enjoying his childhood. DVK mentions going to the cabin, and how every time he goes back he’s bringing with him all the times he’s been there before. Rory jokes that DVK should write a book, and then they say that they should write a Pen Pals book, and that they are recording this in an embrace with a single microphone between them. They bring up one of the first letters about time travel from the “Free Will” letter on 7/11/2018.
